Once again the club was invited to display our models at the Henham Steam Rally and this year we were again blessed with good weather, I don't know how the organizers do it.... The Rally always takes place in the middle of September and this year was no exception. Models were on display at the flightline to the general public both statically and in the air. We once again spaced the display of flying club models with the club trainers which we allowed members of the public to fly with 5 minute sessions on a buddy box system. This always proves to be very popular with the public, especially the youngsters and it was difficult to adhere to the proposed schedule to fly our other models, however a good flying display was put on by the more experienced club pilots. A good display of static models was also seen inside the main model marquee along with an RC simulator.
The photo below shows the stalwart grass cutting crew who spent best part of the thursday before the event cutting the flying strip to a manageable level. From left to right are John Straw, Bob Jones and Malcolm Colby.
The strip mown and almost ready to use, the deep grooves were made by the tractor and topper prior to us getting to work on it, at least they ran up and down the strip. Take notice of the tree at the end of the strip, a hazard if ever there was one..... landings were one side or the other, with a crosswind to boot.
The grass cutting spoils being "lost" under the tree.
Chief mower Bob, not wanting to do too much walking, brought along his ride-on courtesy of Malcolm and his trailer. The tree was duly marked in case we missed it...........
The following shot shows some of the static models on display in the Marquee, some members spent most of the weekend manning the stand in the marquee and only had a break for a visit to the loo and a bite to eat.
The main attraction on the club stand as usual was the RC flight simulator, Dennis Comeau (left) mans the stand while Don Batchelor (in hat) shows a member of the public the controls on the flight simulator, Don spent his entire weekend introducing both youngsters and grown ups to the delights of model flying on the simulator.
